HEALTHY
NUTRITION
We all
have heard of the phrase ‘You are what you eat.’ But what exactly does this mean?
The food we consume is directly responsible for our health and overall well-being. To ensure optimum health and body functions, we need to nourish our bodies with healthy nutrition.
What Is Healthy Nutrition..?
Healthy
nutrition involves consuming a healthy diet which provides the body with
essential nutrients for survival. These nutrients boost energy levels, improve
mood and mental clarity, strengthen the immune system, aid in weight
management and reduce chances of chronic illnesses.
Here are a few tips for a
healthy diet;
v Fill
¼ of the plate with whole grain foods e.g. brown rice, sorghum, millet, oats,
barley. Whole grains are packed with fiber and possess high quantities of
essential nutrients while being low on sugars, sodium and unhealthy fats.
v Fill
½ of the plate with vegetables and fruits which contain vitamins,
antioxidants, minerals and fiber which aid in maintaining healthy weight and
help you stay full for longer.
v Fill
¼ of the plate with protein sources such as legumes, nuts, fish, eggs, poultry
and lean red meat which provide a protein source for body building and repair.
Aim to consume more plant based protein than animal based.
v Use healthy oils that are higher in unsaturated fats; oils derived from olives, avocado, canola, corn, sunflower, peanuts, soy, and sesame and fish oil. Reduce use of saturated fats found in butter, coconut oil, palm oil and reduce consumption of fatty meats.
v Water
is the best source of hydration and is essential for all body functions. Aim
for at least 8 glasses a day, and reduce on carbonated, sugary soft drinks.
v Consume
snacks in moderation instead of complete deprivation. Total deprivation leads
to eventual overeating. Instead, aim for occasional indulgence of your favorite
snacks in controlled proportions.
